Guide to an ancient genre
Dies Irae | Book design
This books presents a meticulous study of the requiem, one of the oldest surviving genres in western music. The cover’s classical and tangible effect is based on the use of structured uncoated paper, with a black embossed square bearing the title. The musical lettering of the title was made with the swash letters of Peter Matthias Noordzij’s Collis. The red fore edge printing is a reference to the 'Graduale Romanum'. The book has a double navigation system: it can be navigated by pagenumber and running head, but also by the notition of time periods.
It won an award for Best Designed Books 2012, in the category 'business & scientific editions'. The book’s design was mentioned during an interview with the author on Belgian national radio.
